Logistics

Kahalu'u Bay Surf and Sea is situated at 78-6685 Ali‘i Drive, Kailua-Kona, directly across from Kahalu'u Bay. The shop operates daily, typically from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM. Surf lessons are offered at multiple times throughout the day, such as 7 AM, 9 AM, 11 AM, 1 PM, and 3 PM. It is recommended to check in at least 10 minutes prior to a surf lesson. All participants are required to sign a liability release waiver.

For parking, Kahalu'u Beach Park, adjacent to the surf shop, provides both a paid parking area and complimentary street parking. As of December 1, 2022, a non-resident parking fee is collected at Kahalu'u Beach Park in 4-hour intervals from 7 AM to 7 PM daily, with Hawaii residents and disabled individuals able to register for a free parking pass. Surfers often park on the far northern ocean side of the bay, closer to the surf entry point near St. Peter's Church, while general beachgoers and snorkelers may use the dedicated parking lot on the south side. Showers and storage units are available on location for lesson participants, as well as temporary parking for loading and unloading gear. Cancellations for lessons require a minimum of 48 hours notice for a refund, with a 72-hour policy for groups of six or more. Lessons generally last two hours, making this a half-day activity.

Safety and cautions

The bay has a shallow coral reef, and low tide can make the water very shallow in certain areas, particularly in front of St. Peter's Catholic Church, which is less than 1 foot deep. Rip currents can be strong when the surf is big, potentially pulling surfers north into the rocky shoreline. Lifeguards are typically stationed at Kahalu'u Beach Park from 9 AM to 5 PM, and their warnings should be obeyed. Beginner surfers and those who are not strong swimmers are advised not to surf without an instructor. It is recommended to observe the water for at least 10 minutes before entering to assess conditions and note where others enter and exit, as well as any rip tides. Surf lessons with certified instructors are highlighted as the safest way to learn. Kahalu'u Bay Surf and Sea reserves the right to cancel lessons due to inclement weather, extreme currents, or rip conditions, with rescheduling offered at no charge. Visitors should bring a swimsuit, towel, and sunscreen.
