Hapuna Beach

Hapuna Beach is one of the Big Island’s signature beach days: a long sweep of white sand on the Kohala Coast, with clear water, lifeguards, and enough space to feel like a real outing rather than a quick photo stop. It sits in the Mauna Kea Beach area of North Kohala, about half an hour north of Kailua-Kona, and works especially well as a half-day anchor or a full-day beach base if the goal is swimming, sunbathing, and easy access to amenities.

The park’s setting also gives it some useful range. The adjacent Ala Kahakai coastal trail adds a walking option if the beach time starts to feel too still, though trail signage can be uneven. That combination—sand, water, and a short land-based add-on—makes Hapuna more flexible than a simple swim stop.

The main tradeoffs

Hapuna’s popularity is part of the story. The parking lot can fill, especially on weekends, and entry is controlled once it does. Arriving early is the safest way to keep the day simple. Ocean conditions also matter a great deal here: winter surf can be powerful, with strong shore break and currents, while calmer summer conditions are far more forgiving. Even with lifeguards on duty, this is not a beach to take lightly when the swell is up.

Shade is limited on the sand, so sun protection matters. Non-resident visitors should also factor in park fees and card-only payment at the entrance.
